Akron Shooting April 2023

No Criminal Charges for 8 Akron Officers who Shot Jayland Walker

April 17, 2023

Grand Jury Declines to Indict

After a month-long investigation, a special grand jury in Ohio has decided not to indict any of the eight Akron police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Jayland Walker. The officers had been placed on administrative leave following the incident, which occurred in June 2022.

According to the grand jury's findings, there was not enough evidence to prove that the officers acted with criminal intent or that they used excessive force. The jury's decision sparked both outrage and relief among community members, many of whom had called for the officers to be held accountable.

The family of Jayland Walker expressed disappointment with the grand jury's decision. In a statement, they said, "We believe that the officers involved should have been held criminally responsible for their actions. Jayland's life was taken from him, and no one will be held accountable."

The city of Akron has pledged to continue working towards police reform and community trust. Mayor Dan Horrigan said, "The grand jury's decision does not diminish our commitment to addressing the systemic issues that led to Jayland Walker's death. We will continue to work with the community to build a more just and equitable city."

The case of Jayland Walker has reignited a national conversation about police use of force and racial justice. The grand jury's decision has left a lasting impression on the community, underscoring the need for ongoing efforts to address these critical issues.
